MENTAL GAME

Payton’s processing speed is a concern. He can work through full-field reads but often takes too long, allowing throwing windows to close and forcing receivers to wait on the ball. His offense leaned heavily on RPO concepts, limiting exposure to complex progression work. To succeed at the next level, he will need to improve decisiveness and develop better anticipation, consistently throwing before receivers fully break open.

ARM TALENT

Payton’s arm strength stands out positively within this class. He consistently pushes the ball downfield with both velocity and touch, showing confidence attacking deeper areas. His accuracy is solid overall, with reliable placement on routine throws and the ability to complete more difficult passes. While not flawless, his arm talent is one of his more translatable traits and gives him a foundation to build upon.

RUSHING/MOBILITY

Mobility is his defining trait. Payton is more fast than quick, but his size and strength make him difficult to bring down in the open field. He consistently generates explosive plays as a runner, including long touchdown runs, and is particularly dangerous in the red zone. Defenses that fail to account for his rushing ability will be punished, giving him legitimate dual-threat upside at the next level.

MANAGEMENT

:
He demonstrates a strong feel for when to lean on his rushing ability and generally avoids putting the ball in harm’s way. Despite taking frequent hits, he limits turnovers and does not take excessive sacks. While the level of competition must be considered, he consistently put his team in advantageous positions. His experience with under-center snaps and wide zone play-action concepts is a positive indicator for scheme translation.

FANTASY OUTLOOK

Evaluating FCS prospects carries inherent risk, but Payton’s physical traits and production stand out. His rushing ability gives him meaningful fantasy upside, although landing with the Eagles who have an established starter in Hurts caps immediate upside. Concerns about processing speed and level of competition remain, but he profiles as an intriguing late-round rookie draft target and taxi squad stash with more upside than many similarly valued quarterbacks.

SUBTLE ARTS

Payton’s mechanics are generally solid, but there are areas for refinement. He carries the ball low in the pocket, exposing it to defenders, and does not consistently navigate tight spaces despite his athleticism. Given his tendency to hold the ball while waiting for routes to develop, improved pocket movement will be critical to his progression against faster NFL defenses.

IDEAL TEAM FITS

Payton's best team fit would be on an offense that allows him to push the ball downfield, while also having the freedom to scramble and create on his own. Teams like the Packers and Lions come to mind.
